Instagram : What The Heck Is It?
“Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing that enables its users to take pictures and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. “ Thanks, Wiki….
What Wikipedia doesn’t tell you is that Instagram, or IG as it’s also referred to, is an amazing platform for your business! Next to Facebook, it’s the most used social media platform out there boasting over 500 million followers and over 70 million pictures PER DAY. Still think your business doesn’t need that kind of exposure…? How do you capture the attention of those users? With Hashtags!
If you haven’t heard of hashtags and don’t understand what they do, let me explain: You post a picture and use words that describe the picture or words that you want to relate the image to and put a “#” in front of word which will then highlight that particular word. When you then click on that highlighted word it acts as a sort of “hyper-link” and will take you to a separate page that will then show you all the other users that posted pictures and included that same word (or tag).
You have a saddle you want to sell. When you post the picture you’d put something along these lines “Saddle for sale! Message me to purchase! #Saddle #TackForSale #SaddleForSale #Horses” Is the saddle used for barrel racing, western pleasure, jumping, dressage, or reining? What about the brand? Is it by Harris Leather, Blue Ribbon Saddles, Martin Saddlery, Pessoa, or Bob’s Saddle? Include those in your tags! #HarrisSaddle #WesternPleasure #BarrelRacing etc…
You can use up to 30 hashtags per post, if you use more than that your picture will still post but your entire caption will seemingly self-destruct and vanish. No worries, you can edit the post and retype your caption (with less tags) and not have to go through reposting the entire picture. The more tags you use the more attention (likes and followers) you will attract i. e. free exposure for your product or service.
